SUBJECTS TAUGHT
English
Our English program begins in Kindergarten with reading readiness. A student who becomes a good reader at an early age is equipped to master any subject throughout his/her academic career. As the child develops, skills in composition are added. We stress phonics, grammar, and spelling. Appreciation of poetry, novels and other written works follows. Literacy and creative projects complete a child’s ability to understand classical and modern literature.
French
French is not simply a subject but also a language of instruction. Emphasis is placed on both oral and written communication and the building of creative writing skills. Our classes are based on the official program of the French Ministry of Education with French classes complementing our English language coursework. Students who enroll in our program in second through fifth grade, without prior knowledge of French are placed in accelerated French as a Second Language (FSL) courses. It is reasonable to expect that a child will be able to enter the mainstream of our program after one or two years of FSL.
Mathematics
Our Mathematics program centers on basic skills and problem-solving abilities. Mathematics is taught from both French and American materials and methodologies. The two blend well: the French system emphasizes concepts and the American system practice. The required program of the French Ministry begins with concrete manipulation and ends with a blend of pre-algebra and beginning geometry. To this we add American components to ensure that our students remain competitive in both systems.
The Sciences
The Sciences are taught in English from American textbooks. From an early age environmental issues are stressed to create individual awareness of the world and its creatures. Students plan and create a variety of science projects and are placed in modified laboratory settings to ensure their knowledge of the tools of the science curriculum.
History and Geography
History and Geography are a combination of both French and American ideas and programs. We begin with French and world history combined with the rudiments of geography. In fourth grade students begin to learn about California and American history.
Art and Geography
Art and Music are an essential part of well-rounded, humanities-centered curriculum. These classes are also designed to be creative and allow students to develop their own identities in a comfortable setting. Both classes provide a good opportunity for students to use their French and English skills.
Physical Education
Physical Education is taught mostly in French. These classes are truly skill oriented classes with emphasis on safety, teamwork, sportsmanship and building knowledge of techniques. Sports include soccer, softball, basketball, volleyball, tennis and gymnastics.
MATIERES ENSEIGNEES
Notre programme d’anglais commence en grande section de maternelle par la préparation à la lecture. Un bon lecteur pourra maîtriser n’importe quelle matière au cours de ses études En fonction des progrès de l’enfant, nous introduisons la rédaction. Nous insistons sur les sons, la grammaire et l’orthographe. Viennent ensuite la poésie, les romans et autres œuvres. La littérature et des projets créatifs servent à compléter les connaissances modernes et classiques de élèves
Le français n’est pas seulement une matière : c’est aussi une langue utilisée pour enseigner. Nous insistons sur la communication verbale et écrite et nous encourageons la narration. Nos cours s’appuient sur le programme officiel du Ministère de l’Education Nationale et les cours en français complètent les cours en anglais. Les élèves inscrits à partir du CE1 jusqu’au CM2 et qui ne parlent pas français, sont placés dans un cours accéléré de français seconde langue (FSL). Ces élèves s’intègrent généralement au programme traditionnel de français en moins de deux ans.
Notre programme de mathématiques est axé sur l’instruction de base et la capacité à résoudre des problèmes. Les mathématiques sont enseignées à l’aide de manuels français et américains. Les deux se complètent parfaitement : le français insiste sur l’idée générale et la comprehension et l’américain préfère la pratique. Le programme établi par le Ministère de l’Education Nationale commence avec des manipulations concrètes et se termine avec une initiation à l’algèbre et à la géométrie. Nous complétons le programme français de faç on à ce que nos élèves soient compétitifs dans les deux systèmes.
Les sciences sont enseignées en anglais avec des manuels américains. Très tôt, l’enfant apprend à apprécier notre environnement et ses problèmes, et à respecter la planète et ses créatures. Les élèves préparent et développent une variété de projets de sciences, utilisant le laboratoire et se familiarisant avec les divers instruments qui si trouvent.
Les cours d’histoire et de géographie représentent une synthèse des programmes français et américains Nous commenç ons par l’histoire de France et du monde, et quelques rudiments de géographie. Au CM1, les élèves commencent à étudier la Californie et l’histoire des Etats Unis.
L’art et la musique ont leur place dans un cursus humaniste. Ces cours encouragent l’enfant à utiliser son imagination et lui permettent de se developer intellectuellement dans un milieu agréable. De plus, il y a matière à exploiter les connaissances des élèves en anglais et en français.
L’éducation physique est enseignée en français. Ce sont des cours qui développent les compétences physiques, l’esprit sportif et bien sur la confiance en soi.
